About the Business Area
The total market for the printing industry in Europe was approximately 100 billion euro in 2007. The growth of the market was 2.4% in 2007. The total market has been in decline in recent years, and is also predicted to decline in the future. The printing industry is divided into two parts, traditional printing and digital printing. The volume of printing production has further developed in recent decades faster than the value of the production, which tells much about the decreased prices for many print products. An overcapacity in the printing industry in Finland has tightened the price competition, which has led to low profitability in the industry. The largest print products, newspapers, magazines and books, together form approximately 75% of the production value in the industry. The printing industry is in a state of flux. The industry is predicted to face companies exiting the market, business reorganisations, and bankruptcies. The total turnover for the printing companies in Finland was approximately 1.7 billion euro in 2007. Digital printing is growing rapidly, and traditional printing is in decline. Internationally listed companies in the industry include Service Point Solutions SA, Vistaprint, American Reprographics Company, and Bording A/S.
Digital Printing Services in Finland
The digital printing market is growing by approximately 10-20% annually. The digital printing market is expected to grow in Finland over the course of the next 10 years. The consolidation development of the industry has only recently begun, in which the number of operators is expected to decrease. Digital printing will not totally displace traditional printing, but the printing methods will diverge product by product. The market entry threshold for digital printing is high due to the significant start-up investment and expense of the equipment. They account for approximately 7-10% of the total turnover. The main customers of the print services are public services, schools and companies, as well as building companies for technical drawings.
Digital Printing Takes Away Markets from Traditional Printing
Digital printing is expected to grow larger than traditional printing in total turnover by 2020. The reasons for this change are the developments in technology, the digitalisation of information processing, customer needs, and reduced printing amounts. Moreover, the outsourcing of the customers' copy centres is increasing the digital printing market. The trends of the industry include:
• Print on demand
• Shortening of the delivery cycle: In 2010, a third of all print products will be delivered in less than 24 hours.
• Decrease in series sizes: Most of the orders are already printed in series smaller than 5,000 pieces.
• Increase in coloured pages: Digital colour printing is expected to grow by approximately 27% in 2009.
• Increase in changing information: Increasingly more digital print products are being personalised.
• The development of material and information databases brings the printing company and customer closer together.
• The technologies in the industry are changing, and only large enough dynamic operators have the resources to make the investments required for the development of their operations.

Business Area Special Features
The demand for copy and print products may partly be countercyclical in marketing and training materials as well as copy centre outsourcing, for example. The costs of printing companies are expected to grow faster than the general price development in the industry. The largest single cost for the printing companies is the personnel expenses. Paper accounts for approximately one-third of the production expenses. Profitability is also affected by the price of oil as a basic ingredient of ink and printing colours, and the development of logistics costs. Critical success factors in the industry include a fast delivery cycle, reliability of operation, a wide product and service selection, and a strong local position and national network.
