The environmental sector in general

The environmental business can be divided into nine different areas. These are water, climate, energy, waste, soil, noise, materials technology, clean technologies and measurements, monitoring and services. Together they are worth around EUR 600 billion on the global market. And the market is growing by an average of 5-7% a year. In Finland the value of the environmental sector market is EUR 5-7 billion.

The size of the waste and recycling sector and developments in it

The entire global market in waste and recycling is worth around EUR 250 billion. Of this the EU25 area accounts for approximately EUR 115 billion. Equipment accounts for about 15% of the recycling market in Finland, and roughly 6% elsewhere. The entire market for waste management equipment solutions in Finland is worth around EUR 80-100 million. The turnover for companies in the industry has increased in recent years by an average of 15%. The waste pipeline transportation market is at present valued at approximately EUR 400-500 million globally. Europe's share of the market is about a fourth, at EUR 100-125 million.

Trends in the industry and drivers of change

The main drivers of growth in the business and the major trends in the industry are:

  1. Urbanisation and areas of denser population are boosting the demand for waste management solutions that save space and minimise inconvenience. The planning and upgrading of recycling and waste collection systems are playing an important role in regional planning
